Rice Bank

The rice bank of Silapathar Science was conceptualised by Dr. Ranjit Saikia, Principal, Silapathar Science College and decided to be established on 4th December, 2016. On that day, an exceptional Mela referred to as “Dhan Mela” (Paddy Exhibition) was held at the college campus. Around 500 students along with few farmers participated in Exhibition and exhibited various landrace rice varieties grown in Dhemaji district and adjoining areas of neighboring districts. The Mela was inaugurated by MAC executive Mr. Johan Doley. Dr. Uma Kanta Sarma and Dr. David Kardong were invited for the program and they spoke on conservation and production of indigenous rice, also mentioned about importance of indigenous rice varieties.

As per the decision taken on the day of Rice Festival (Dhan Mela), a rice bank has been established on the day of National Science day, 28th Feb of 2017. The Rice Bank was inaugurated jointly by Mr. Manoj Kr. Das, Director, IIE, Guwahati and Mr. Dharma Kanta Mili, Assistant Commissioner, Dhemaji. The Rice bank of Silapathar Science College at its present stage is actually a museum of paddy where 251 different types of indigenous rice varieties along with 30 varieties of HYV have been conserved..

OBJECTIVES OF THE RICE BANK: 

1. Documentation of all the indigenous rice grown in Dhemaji district. 

2. Taking conservation strategies for qualities indigenous paddy. 

3. Commercialization of local paddy and generation of rural livelihood for farmers.
