National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme (NSS)

National Service Scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India, popularly known as NSS was launched at Silapathar Science College, Silapathar on 28th  March, 2013with a total enrollment of 100 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service. The NSS unit at Silapathar Science College is enrolled under Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh. The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

As per National Policy on Education special emphasis has been given to NSS in which it has been proposed that every student would be expected to participate either in NSS or NCC. It is now realized that the scheme is useful for the personality development of the students, particularly in the context of the present campus situation in our country where the opportunities to students for personality development and other activities are scarce. There is thus a need for all to work towards a situation where all the students of undergraduate course and +2level can have such opportunities through the NSS as envisaged in National Policy on Education.

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

          a.       understand the community in which they work

          b.      understand themselves in relation to their community

          c.       identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving

          d.      develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility

          e.       utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems

          f.       develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities

          g.      gain skills in mobilising community participation

          h.      acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes

          i.       develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and

          j.       practise national integration and social harmony.

The following thrust areas have been identified for NSS activities as directive from the Dibrugarh University in the financial year 2012 – 2013:

          a)      Disaster Management

          b)      Environmental Awareness and Conservation

          c)      Health and Hygiene

A team of 9 students from Silapathar Science College represented the Assam State NSS Team to take part in the National Youth Festival held at Chattisgarh during month of January, 2016.
