Prof. S. K. Borthakur Study Circle

S. K. BORTHAKUR STUDY CIRCLE

Dr. S. K. Borthakur, Retd. Professor, Department of Botany, Gauhati University, has donated more than 1000 books to Silapathar Science College. He is concurrently a plant taxonomist, an ethnobotanist, a conservation biologist and ardent researcher on traditional knowledge. He has supervised 50 Ph.D. thesis and 25 M.Phil. dissertations. He has also published 215 research articles in peer received national and international journals, 38 articles/chapters/invented presentations & lectures and also published 14 books in addition to 3 edited books. 

To save his contribution and dedication in the field to the world, Silapathar Science College inaugurated a library named “S. K. Borthakur Study Circle” in presence of Dr. S. K. Borthakur on 24th October, 2019. Dr. Hari Chandra Mahanta, Registrar, Dibrugarh University, inaugurated the “S.K. Borthakur Study Circle” by cutting red ribbon. Then all the guests were taken to “Natasurya Phani Sharma” Auditorium for the Inaugural  Programe to mark the occasion and the program started with ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Dr. V. Kondinya, President, Silapathar Science College. Dr. Ranjit Saikia, Principal of Silapathar Science College, welcomed all the presented dignitaries by giving a warm welcome address. He also added a speech to appreciate Dr. S. K. Borthakur for donating all the books which he was saving from years on his own library.  He also said that the “S. K. Borthakur Study Circle” Makes Silapathar Science College’s soul alive. 

After welcome address, the program started with a soulful Borgeet by Seema Gogoi, ex-student of Silapathar Science College. Dr. Jitu Gogoi, Asst. Professor, Botany Department, gave presentation on Rice bank, Orchid House, MPDC hall and different activities of Silapathar Science College. 

Dr. S. K. Borthakur shared his feeling with everyone present. He said that all the books he has been saving for years got a safe place and also added that especially those books can be very much helpful to the research scholar for their research works. He narrated in soulful words about his journey of his research life. 

Dr. Utpal Das, Deputy Librarian, & HoD, Dept. of Library Sc., Dibrugarh University, gave a presentation on “Information seeking behaviour in college library”. The program ended with a grateful vote of thanks by Mr. Ankush Chutia, Asst. Professor, Department of English, Silapathar Science College.
